The Varsity

Emo, Indie, Pop Punk | Wilmington, North Carolina

Emerging from the coastal city of Wilmington, NC, The Varsity is redefining the genres of punk, emo, and pop. Fronted on vocals by Ben Fleetwood, the backbone of the band was formed when Nick Martin (drums), and Scott Baker (guitar) started performing together out of Charleston, SC in early 2003. By mid 2004, The Varsity had relocated to Wilmington, NC and completed its line-up with the addition of Andy Mosley on guitar, and Matt Hendricks on bass. Despite other opportunities (Ben is a pro golfer, and Andy has a degree in philosophy), the members of The Varsity decided long ago that music was their one true love. As a result, the band's self-titled EP was released in August of 2004. The work showcases the band's past year and a half in five songs about friendship, growing older, and of course - heartbreak. The EP's emotional intensity translates to the stage which the band has shared with the likes of Taking Back Sunday, MAE, The Snake The Cross The Crown, Atreyu, Glasseater, Anberlin, and Funeral for a Friend. While searching for the magic ingredient to straighten Scott and Nick's hair, and indulging in Matt's love of frisbee golf, they've played countless shows up and down the east coast winning fans with a barrage of unforgettable choruses, killer smiles, and a sharp wit that keeps the audience coming back. The autumn of 2004 brought a new opportunity for The Varsity in the form of a spot on Taking Back Sunday's national tour. With influences ranging from Lifetime and Glassjaw, to The Smashing Pumpkins and Hum, to Maroon 5, The Varsity is constantly pushing the boundaries of emo while giving pop-punk a new edge that had long been dulled.

Ben Fleetwood went on to start the band Life of the Party, they can be found HERE.
