So Contagious

Pop Punk, Alternative, Rock | Atlanta, Georgia

Some people are firm believers of fate and destiny, others not so much. The members of Atlanta rock act So Contagious feel as if the pieces to their puzzle are perfectly aligning.

Meet lead vocalist/bassist Ryan McManus, guitarists and backup vocalists TJ Routon and Justin Calalay, and drummer Wesley Moore. The group of young individuals have found a creative spark within one another like never before. Whether it be writing new material, marketing their music to new faces via the internet, or touring in their 15 passenger van better known to them as “the maroon moose”, the band is constantly busy ensuring each day is a step forward.

Members: Ryan McManus (Lead Vocals/Bass), TJ Routon (Guitar/Backup Vocals), Justin Calalay (Guitar/Backup Vocals), Wesley Moore (Drums)

The guys began touring the US and writing songs full-time in June of 2009. They dropped out of college, rejected scholarships, and one member even moved all the way across the country leaving his family and everything he knew behind. “Everyone put their lives on hold to begin touring and writing full-time. I never thought I would be living all the way across the country playing music,” explains Routon. After the departure of the bands former guitarist, the California native quit the LA Recording School in Los Angeles, CA and flew out to Atlanta to try out, and later on, join the band. “This is very cliché, but TJ was that missing piece to the puzzle,” states Moore. “I don’t know what it was exactly, but that chemistry and connection was there. It just worked. We didn’t even really know each other at first…to me, he was just some kid I was friends with on MySpace. I was freaking out because we had all just quit college and explained to our parents how we wanted to be rockstars, had our first ever tour coming up, and our old guitarist decided it wasn’t for him and quit. TJ randomly popped into the picture 3 weeks beforehand, learned all the songs, and things were golden again. It’s like it was just meant to be,” continues Moore.

Formerly known as “Seven Story Fall”, the group sold 20,000 singles, toured throughout various states in the country, and played multiple dates on larger tours such as: the Vans Warped Tour, Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour, and Journeys Backyard BBQ Tour. Changing their name in June for legal reasons, the boys re-amped everything and prepared to create something intriguing to the world.

Band Photo by Angelo Valentine, 2010

The band spent the entire month of April 2010 residing 30 minutes south of Orlando in St Cloud, FL. They were camped out in legendary gold record producer James Paul Wisner’s living room creating their most recent release, the EP “Locked & Loaded”. Wisner is also the man behind artists such as: Paramore, Underoath, The Academy Is, and Dashboard Confessional. His experience, mindset, and overall outlook helped the guys prepare to create something natural and real that was inspired by their roots. “It was incredible working with James,” states 19 year-old front man Ryan McManus. “Our drummer Wes met him at a show in Orlando during the Summer of 2009. We kept in touch and every time we recorded a new demo at our home studio, we’d send it to him to get his thoughts and opinions. We decided that once the time was right, we HAD to work together. He simply “got” our band and understood exactly what we were trying to do.” The songs speak for themselves, catchy roll down your windows tunes that leave you singing along for days. “Locked & Loaded” is something that allows Warped Tour kids and 34-year-old soccer moms to rejoice and sing along to. The EP is well balanced, containing songs such as “Never Say Goodbye” that have a nice Summer time feel, as well as a powerful rock ballad titled “Take You Away”. It’s appealing and marketable, but still rock.

“It felt good recording this CD. Before we tracked any instrument, we all sat down and discussed our goals with music and life in general just to make sure we were on the same page,” says guitarist Justin Calalay. Prior to hitting the studio with Wisner, the band wrote 15-20 songs. “We knew what we wanted and weren’t scared to throw away songs. Sometimes it would be just an instrumental, and we’d trash it. Other times it would be a full song with vocals and everything, and it wouldn’t make the cut,” elaborates TJ Routon.

It’s obvious these youngsters are onto something special. While most people their age are still figuring out exactly what career path to take, they’re progressing day by day and building their future. Living in a new age online world where every band has the chance to be heard, it’s important to create a product that is undeniable. Something that people can’t resist & they are just naturally attracted to. So Contagious did just that with their EP “Locked & Loaded”.

As drummer Wes Moore says, “There is no better promotion than word of mouth.” It’s always good to have something that spreads naturally…something “Contagious”.

Seven Story Fall

Pop Punk, Alternative, Post-Hardcore | Atlanta, Georgia
Myspace Header

There are very few cities in the South that are fulfilled with a constant twirl of nightlife and entertainment. Atlanta, GA is by far one of the few. It's known as the home to various multi-platinum rap artists, the Atlanta Braves MLB Franchise, and up and coming Atlanta rock act Seven Story Fall. The group is making their own unique mark on the city and igniting a buzz throughout the world.

Seven Story Fall is - vocalist Mike Hart, bassist/back-up vocalist Ryan McManus, guitarist/back-up vocalist David Hart, guitarist Justin Calalay and drummer Wesley Moore. The group has been slaving away at their instruments since 2005 and people have been catching on ever since. At an average age of 18, they've created an online frenzy that has led to many accomplishments and the development of a worldwide fan-base. "We put a lot of focus into promoting ourselves on the web. By doing so, we are able to connect with all of our fans and reach out to people who would have never heard of us. We have intentions of becoming an internationally touring act, so the internet is definitely working in our favor" says Moore.

Seven Story Fall's most recent work was recorded with famed gold record producers Zack Odom & Kenneth Mount (Cartel, Mayday Parade, All Time Low) at the legendary Tree Sound Studios in Norcross, GA. The 4 song EP titled "The Getaway" contains showstoppers such as "Don't Say" and "The Getaway". Each track rips and tears through speakers with punchy guitars, pounding drum rhythms, and soothing and melodic vocals that are catchy enough to keep you singing along for weeks. "When we began writing for this EP, we knew it was going to be something special. Each song was written with passion and we were all on the same page. I remember sometimes starting practice at 8 AM to ensure we were writing at the best of our ability", explains Calalay. "The Getaway" proves that Seven Story Fall has a bright future ahead and is dedicated enough to "do what it takes" to ensure success.

The 5 young men have learned to take advantage of every opportunity that has crossed their path. Their relentless work efforts helped them lock in spots on both the 2007 Vans Warped Tour, and 2008 Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour in Atlanta. "It simply felt surreal to play a 13,000 seat arena in our hometown while only being 18 years old" states Mike Hart. "I couldn't help but just smile when we drove past the front of the venue and there were thousands of people waiting for the doors to open", continues Hart. Aside from these 2 extremely large shows, Seven Story Fall has played with numerous nationally touring acts in the South East. Their hometown draw is steadily increasing and is now at a rate of 300+.

Band Photo by Ryan G, 2009

With live shows that are full of stage synchronized moves, crowd sing-alongs, and back flips, Seven Story Fall is a certain to be added to your "must see" list. The band plans on beginning to tour full time shortly after the release of "The Getaway". "We love playing live shows. There is no better feeling than seeing someone connect to your music and actually FEEL the song" says McManus. "We want our music to change people and be a getaway from their day-to-day lives. Whether it be helping them through tough times, or providing them with inspiration." elaborates David Hart.

Previous Members: Josh Connell (Guitar/Vocals), Adam Ingram (Bass/Vocals)

Ryan, Justin, and Wesley went on to start the band So Contagious, which you can find HERE.

Credible Witness is a Piano Rock/Alternative band that formed in 2003 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, as a small hobby that would later become what they would pursue as a career. With influences like Relient K, Jack's Mannequin, Mae, Sherwood, Switchfoot, Muse and many more bands, Credible Witness' style proves to be unique to their own music scene. With Ryan Brough, 18, on drums, Walter Senko, 21, piano and lead vocals, Bobby Jacques, 21, on guitar, Michael DiDomenico, 21, guitar and vocal and Jonathan Loiselle, 23, on bass and vocals, their live shows prove to be energetic and passionate with the band's major influences coming out on stage.

Walter and Michael had the idea of Credible Witness for a few years before the rest of the band joined in late 2006. The members of Credible Witness decided to form the band in a local coffee shop where they frequented on a regular basis.

Since then, Credible Witness has recorded an EP, which they have independently pushed over 1000 copies at local shows, received over 50,000 plays and profile hits on myspace, had their song, "Million Stars", featured in the short film "Driving Sideways" and have opened for acts like, Social Code, Hello Kelly, Faber Drive, The Artist Life, and The Ataris.

Deja Norm'al

Alternative, Rock, Indie | Battle Creek, Michigan
Band Photo, 2005

Deja Norm'al began in November of 2003 when vocalist/guitarist Mike Mains and pianist Tia Cain began writing music together in Mike’s room in Bellevue, MI. The theme of their music was simple, something new & innovative. The early lyrical and musical direction of Deja Norm'al was a dark one because a lot of the songwriting and lyrics derived from the loss of Mike’s three friends over a three-month period. Hence the song “Three Leaves Falling”.

Both Cain and Mains realized that in order to complete their sound they needed a guitarist, bassist, and drummer. While shopping in Battle Creek’s very own Lakeview Square Mall, they found guitarist Matt Dilliner whom was friends with Nick DeMott, who would also join the band to play bass. The last thing they needed was a drummer and after 6 different tries they found Benji Myers, whom after the very first show parted ways with the band to move to California. He was soon replaced by Karl Woodward, of Lake City, MI.

With a new drummer and a new focus they all made sure that there faith would be the driving force behind their first record. The album would be recorded at Broadside Productions in Kalamazoo, MI and set for release on February 22 of 2005. Just one month after the release of their album, bassist Nick DeMott parted ways with the band the day before an out of town battle of the bands. Chris Morrow then joined that day and Deja Norm’al went on to win the battle. This was the first time where they knew that their chemistry could not be broken.

It is apparent that Deja Norm'al holds strong to their Christian values and when opportunity strikes they are ready to take the world by storm. Now, with a full line of merchandise, a 22 ft shuttle bus (converted to a tour bus and purchased from Tooth & Nail band mewithoutYou), Deja Norm'al plans to tour from now until the second coming and also plans to release a full length by fall/winter of 2005.

MUSIC: You can call it indie, post-hardcore, experimental, or just plain old rock! Deja Norm'al’s live show is unlike any other. It is non-stop energy from start to finish and they normally have a more extreme show than the hardcore bands they play with. During a normal concert you will see Mike (guitarist/vocalist) jumping off the drumset, spinning the microphone, rolling on the ground, and running all across the stage. You will also see Matt (guitarist/back ground vocalist) jumping up and down on the stage, head banging, dancing, and doing the mighty guitar flip! Chris (bassist) and Tia (pianist) also have a live show that is all their own where they feed off of each other and get into the music and jump around. Then we come to Karl (drummer). Utilizing a double bass and his incredible technical skill, he is what makes people think that they are a hardcore band.

We have a normal draw of about 100+ coming to each show. They have played in cities all across Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Deja Norm'al was also just recently featured on the front page of PureVolume and have now collected well over 21,000 plays. That means that they also have the luxury of playing both churches and clubs because they have double the fanbase as a regular band.

Half the Battle

Emo, Alternative, Pop Punk | Fairfield, Ohio

Half the Battle is a punk and emo influenced band from Fairfield, Ohio.  The foursome formed in the late August of 2001.  The band is actually a merge of two pre-existing bands.  The three original members (Rob, Matt and Brad) were first in a pop punk band called Fallout.  They shared the stage with a local horror punk band named Worse for Wear.  After a few shows, the boys and the lead singer of Worse for Wear (Justin) became friends.  Shortly following but a few shows, each of these bands called it quits.  The "Fallout Boys" started a more emo-influenced band called, Half the Battle.  Justin wrote by himself for several months.  It wasn't until late September of 2001 that Justin filled in as a guest vocalist for two fun shows with Half the Battle.  Well, it turns out, there was such a good response and things worked out so well, that the boys asked Justin to permanently stay with the band.  Justin quickly agreed and they began writing original tunes.  Before long, Half the Battle started playing shows.  It seemed to be going well so they began playing more frequently.  That is pretty much where it is left off.  They are fortunate in the respect that it seems their music is catching on and people are digging it.  So hopefully things will continue in the same light they currently are.

Members were: Justin Sheldon (Vocals/Guitar), Rob Cargioli (Bass/Vocals), Matt White (Guitar), Brad Moore (Drums)

The Few

Alternative, Pop Rock | Knoxville, Tennessee

When a band starts over with a new singer, it's like being given a blank canvas, and The Few decided to go all Jackson Pollock on it. The Knoxville, Tennessee band's members have been literally painting themselves for both promotional photos and live shows. It's a visual gimmick the members thought would help give the band a fun vibe that's often lacking in the current, oh-so-serious rock landscape.

"We racked our brains trying to come up with a concept that would be different," said guitarist Seth Rowlette.

The band's sound, on the other hand, is still a work in progress. Having just formed in January, The Few has had a busy six months writing new material, taking it into the studio and preparing for a tour that includes a slot at Rockapalooza on Saturday at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.

"We had a game plan right off the bat," Rowlette said. "We just hit the ground running and tried not to waste any time." The band members have plenty of prior experience when it comes to life on the road. Rowlette and the rest of the rhythm section spent five years together in a band. When they decided to take a new direction, they invited Lindsey Stamey, another member of the Knoxville scene whose previous band had just broken up, to join them on vocals.

Adding Stamey immediately changed the band's sound. It also made it easy to lump the band in with other popular rock bands from the South that lace post-grunge riffs with melodic female vocals, which doesn't bother Rowlette in the slightest. "We get a lot of comparisons to Flyleaf, Paramore and Evanescence," he said. "Those are amazing. I'll take those any day."

Though the band shouldn't have trouble fitting in with the rest of the hard-rock and metal acts playing at Rockapalooza, "we don't consider ours a heavy rock band," Rowlette said. "We have some indie influences and even some dance influences. We're really just trying to write as much as possible, defining our sound with every song we write."

Members: Lindsey Stamey (Vocals), Thomas Boyd (Bass), Colin Cunningham (Drums), Seth Rowlette (Guitar), Cameron Cunningham (Keyboards)

After releasing their debut EP the band changed their name to Oh No Fiasco, which you can find HERE.
