Our Devices

Post-Hardcore, Rock, Experimental | Reno, Nevada
Band Photo, 2010

Sometimes the ringing in your ears is welcome. It signifies the experience of a good hardcore show. The kind you used to frequent in high school, taking you back to the days of chugging tall cans in the parking lot before running in to catch your friend’s band and maybe joining the mosh pit.

In the case of Our Devices’ assault on the eardrums, the ringing infliction is caused by a progressive hardcore sound—furious, fast-paced instrumentals underlying catchy vocals and digestible lyrics—think Finch meets Anberlin. It’s a formula the local quintet didn’t stumble upon accidentally.

“We really want to reach a broad audience,” singer Kraig Morgan explains. “That’s why a lot of the songs are more structural and almost radio-friendly. We want to find this happy middle ground where we’re still doing what we love, but at the same time playing what people want to hear.”

Despite having just played its first show and only being together as Our Devices for three short months, its members themselves aren’t newbies to the ways of the music world. All five musicians have previously played in other local bands—Morgan formerly in Ashton, and drummer Nick York, guitarist Jessie Gonzales and bassist Alex York were all members of The Airplane Game, and guitarist Joe Foley still currently plays in Wolf City.

Past experiences taught them to run their current show a bit differently this time around. Instead of traditionally playing live before making it into the studio, Our Devices digitally released its debut, self-titled EP earlier this month before ever taking the songs to the stage.

“From previous projects, we’ve all been in a position where we’re doing things kind of unprofessionally, so we all agreed that we wanted to do something that was completed before we presented it in front of people,” says Morgan. “We wanted to make sure that we had a record that sounded decent.” The album got its professional sound courtesy of Fat Cat studios in Sacramento, where acts such as This Calendar Year have recorded.

2010 member line up: Jessie Gonzales (Guitar), Nick York (Drums), Alex York (Bass), Joe Foley (Guitar), Kraig Morgan (Vocals)

While some bands tend to pick their names based off the current popular forest animal, or just something that rolls fluidly off the tongue, Our Devices branding was carefully chosen.

“The name of the band comes from the term, ‘when left to your own devices,’” Gonzales, who coined the moniker, explains. “It sums up the whole band because when it’s just left up to us, that’s all we have, our sound.”

A sound that’s a mix of all five members’ talents and musical tastes. Each member contributed to at least one song on the EP, though Morgan is responsible for all the lyrics. Each member brought inspiration from their various favorite genres to the table.

“It’s kind of an eclectic mix of what these guys listen to, which is harder stuff, and what I listen to, softer, more straightforward rock like Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie,” Morgan says of the EP’s five songs.

Our Devices is also not a band without a long-term plan. Having all grownup in the Reno music scene, they’ve got a bigger goal other than just bringing the music they love to the masses—and, they’re quick to point out, aside from world domination, of course.

“Basically, I want to rejuvenate the scene,” says Morgan. “Back to the way it was when I was in high school and kids didn’t care what they looked like when they rocked out in the crowd. I really want that Reno scene back again.”

2011 member line up (left to right): Joe Foley (Guitar), Nick York (Drums), Adam (Vocals), Alex York (Bass), Jessie Gonzales (Guitar)

After the release of their debut EP the band changed vocalists.

Seven Story Fall

Pop Punk, Alternative, Post-Hardcore | Atlanta, Georgia
Myspace Header

There are very few cities in the South that are fulfilled with a constant twirl of nightlife and entertainment. Atlanta, GA is by far one of the few. It's known as the home to various multi-platinum rap artists, the Atlanta Braves MLB Franchise, and up and coming Atlanta rock act Seven Story Fall. The group is making their own unique mark on the city and igniting a buzz throughout the world.

Seven Story Fall is - vocalist Mike Hart, bassist/back-up vocalist Ryan McManus, guitarist/back-up vocalist David Hart, guitarist Justin Calalay and drummer Wesley Moore. The group has been slaving away at their instruments since 2005 and people have been catching on ever since. At an average age of 18, they've created an online frenzy that has led to many accomplishments and the development of a worldwide fan-base. "We put a lot of focus into promoting ourselves on the web. By doing so, we are able to connect with all of our fans and reach out to people who would have never heard of us. We have intentions of becoming an internationally touring act, so the internet is definitely working in our favor" says Moore.

Seven Story Fall's most recent work was recorded with famed gold record producers Zack Odom & Kenneth Mount (Cartel, Mayday Parade, All Time Low) at the legendary Tree Sound Studios in Norcross, GA. The 4 song EP titled "The Getaway" contains showstoppers such as "Don't Say" and "The Getaway". Each track rips and tears through speakers with punchy guitars, pounding drum rhythms, and soothing and melodic vocals that are catchy enough to keep you singing along for weeks. "When we began writing for this EP, we knew it was going to be something special. Each song was written with passion and we were all on the same page. I remember sometimes starting practice at 8 AM to ensure we were writing at the best of our ability", explains Calalay. "The Getaway" proves that Seven Story Fall has a bright future ahead and is dedicated enough to "do what it takes" to ensure success.

The 5 young men have learned to take advantage of every opportunity that has crossed their path. Their relentless work efforts helped them lock in spots on both the 2007 Vans Warped Tour, and 2008 Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour in Atlanta. "It simply felt surreal to play a 13,000 seat arena in our hometown while only being 18 years old" states Mike Hart. "I couldn't help but just smile when we drove past the front of the venue and there were thousands of people waiting for the doors to open", continues Hart. Aside from these 2 extremely large shows, Seven Story Fall has played with numerous nationally touring acts in the South East. Their hometown draw is steadily increasing and is now at a rate of 300+.

Band Photo by Ryan G, 2009

With live shows that are full of stage synchronized moves, crowd sing-alongs, and back flips, Seven Story Fall is a certain to be added to your "must see" list. The band plans on beginning to tour full time shortly after the release of "The Getaway". "We love playing live shows. There is no better feeling than seeing someone connect to your music and actually FEEL the song" says McManus. "We want our music to change people and be a getaway from their day-to-day lives. Whether it be helping them through tough times, or providing them with inspiration." elaborates David Hart.

Previous Members: Josh Connell (Guitar/Vocals), Adam Ingram (Bass/Vocals)

Ryan, Justin, and Wesley went on to start the band So Contagious, which you can find HERE.

Behind the Blindfold

Rock, Pop, Post-Hardcore | St. Louis, Missouri
Band Photo by Jade Renee, 2007

There is a time to love, a time to hate, a time to weep, a time to mourn, and a time to ROCK!!!!! Behind the Blindfold is five members who live by this creed. In a time where music falls under speculation without hesitation Patrick Blair, Matt Elliott, Jim Kopplin, Matt Brennecke, and Derek Maybie have found this to be there dying goal despite the desperate times they have to face.

Patrick Blair (Vocals), Matt Brennecke (Guitar), Matt Elliott (Guitar), Jim Kopplin (Drums), Derek Maybie (Bass)

An infusion of Rock and Pop has brought them together to make music that they love and a common bond to step on stage and put forth the effort to leave with plenty of smiles and five soar necks. Sharing a stage with National acts such as Lorene Drive, So they Say, and Bullets and Octane has not stopped them from seeking bigger stages and more fans to play for. Even a sold out show with hometown heroes Story of the Year, and Warped Tour under their belts they are not planning on stopping anytime soon. With a date to play local radio station 105.7 the points annual festival Pointfest with such heavy hitters as Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace they are convinced that the time is now to take their rock to the mainstream and convince all the speculators that they will stop at nothing to take their music to mass levels across the globe.

For the Story's Sake

Rock, Emo, Post-Hardcore | Berwick, Maine
Band Photo by Tucker Leary, 2008

For the Story's Sake is a five piece band from the 207. Together, they blend together a mix of hard riffs, harmonies, and melodies. Making music that demands to be heard, and taking listeners by storm, the five pour their hearts into the music. With the release of the five song EP, Between Where We've Lacked, they show their versatile writing style. Wasting no time, they've already begun works on numerous other tracks. For the Story's Sake's effort and drive make their shows more than a showcasing of music, as they show their true passion they have for music as a whole. Guitars, mics, and bodies fly through the air. Breakdowns move the room, solos melt faces, and one liners claw their way into your head and never leave. The energy on the stage makes it impossible to just stand and stare.
